With EPS Growth And More, Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX) Makes An Interesting Case – Yahoo Sport Australia

The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, ‘Long shots almost never pay off.’ A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.
In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide Lam Research with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so you’d expect share price to follow earnings per share (EPS) outcomes eventually. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. It certainly is nice to see that Lam Research has managed to grow EPS by 36% per year over three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we’d expect shareholders to come away satisfied.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. EBIT margins for Lam Research remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 14% to US$18b. That’s encouraging news for the company!

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$63b company like Lam Research. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Indeed, they have a considerable amount of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$178m. This comes in at 0.3% of shares in the company, which is a fair amount of a business of this size. So despite their percentage holding being low, company management still have plenty of reasons to deliver the best outcomes for investors.
For growth investors, Lam Research’s raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. Further, the high level of insider ownership is impressive and suggests that the management appreciates the EPS growth and has faith in Lam Research’s continuing strength. Fast growth and confident insiders should be enough to warrant further research, so it would seem that it’s a good stock to follow. We don’t want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for Lam Research (1 is a bit concerning!) that you need to be mindful of.
