Tokyo Electron to hike starting salaries by 40% – Electronics Weekly
4th January 2024
Tokyo Electron is increasing the salary for new recruits by about 40%.
Graduates will get $2161 a month and those with advanced degrees will get $2270, compared with the average Japanese starting salary at private-sector firms of around $1,490 a month for graduates and $1,630 for those with higher degrees.
In the Spring, the company expects to recruit 400 new people.
Tokyo Electron’s average salary is $8250. The company says it has to raise salaries to compete with those offered by the foreign competition.
Applied Materials’ operation in Japan is offering graduates $2624 a month, Micron’s Japan unit is offering $2198 and Lam Research’s Japanese office is offering $2127.
With TSMC and Rapidus building fabs in Japan backed by large government subsidies, the prospects for Japanese suppliers to the semiconductor industry look particularly rosy.
