TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) Chair James Huang (黃志芳) led a trade delegation to discuss cooperation with Polish tech company VIGO Photonics on Thursday (June 13).
Visiting the company’s headquarters in Warsaw, Huang said Poland’s advantages in Central Europe include convenient transportation and a highly skilled workforce, per CNA. The chair said he was hopeful in leveraging Taiwan’s semiconductor industry strength to deepen Taiwan-European semiconductor cooperation.
Huang highlighted Central Europe’s solid foundational science education and abundant research talent to support Taiwanese companies investing in Europe.
“MediaTek, a major IC design company, has already established an R&D center in Warsaw,” Huang explained. “Given the concentration of the global semiconductor industry in Asia, VIGO Photonics views Taiwan as a strategic entry point into the Asian semiconductor market.”
VIGO Photonics CEO Adam Piotrowski said in a CNA interview the application fields of photonics are vast, including semiconductor materials. VIGO Photonics has already entered NASA’s supply chain, providing sensor products for Mars rovers, he added.
“The Russo-Ukrainian War has heightened military market demand,” Piotrowski said. “As a key sensor supplier for the Polish defense industry, military application sensors have seen significant growth due to the ongoing conflict.”
“Investments in the semiconductor industry, such as TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co) and Intel’s expansion plans, are also driving demand for semiconductor equipment and system sensors,” the CEO added.
Piotrowski mentioned TSMC as a potential supply chain partner and said he hopes for deeper collaboration between Taiwan and Poland’s sensor and semiconductor-related industries.
