NVIDIA & AMD To Establish New R&D Facilities In Taiwan For Next-Gen AI & Semiconductors – Wccftech

Taiwan looks to be the center of attraction for companies’ facilities, as both NVIDIA and AMD plan to build their new R&D centers in Taiwan.
Taiwanese media, such as CTEE and Taiwan Economic Daily, have disclosed that NVIDIA & AMD plan to consolidate their position in Taiwan through new R&D centers. In terms of NVIDIA, the firm already has one R&D center, established in the Neihu District, Taiwan, back in 2022, which focused on the AI sector, which is why the facility specializes in working on AI projects. Similarly, Taiwan’s ministry has now disclosed that NVIDIA plans to build a second “AI R&D” in the southern city of Kaohsiung, where, apart from research, Team Green plans to build the largest supercomputer in the region as well.
NVIDIA’s 2nd R&D center will compromise on the “Taipei-1” supercomputer, which is being built in collaboration with Foxconn, and 25% of the supercomputer’s capabilities will be reserved for government sectors such as academics and industry to encourage the use of generative AI and LLMs to excel in the era of AI.
With this, NVIDIA and the Taiwanese government hope to see extended cooperation between the two firms. Along with that, the government has also aided AMD in developing its R&D center in Taiwan to maintain a balanced relationship.
Regarding AMD’s R&D center, it is said that the firm is looking to spend 5 billion yuan to establish its facility in Taiwan, with cities such as Tainan and Kaohsiung being contenders for the project’s location. This came after Team Red applied for Taiwan’s subsidy program, after which local governments cooperated with the firm to fulfill their pursuit of Taiwan. AMD’s CEO Lisa Su plans on visiting Taiwan next week, where not only would we see confirmation on the plans for AMD’s R&D center, but the CEO also looks to be involved in other developments associated with the supply chain.
Taiwan does look like the “hot spot” for companies like AMD & NVIDIA since the region is equipped with cutting-edge semiconductor capabilities & has well-structured policies favoring the companies to expect.
