Despite the resurgence of semiconductor manufacturing jobs in the US following the passage of the CHIPS and Science Act, filling these positions presents challenges due to a shortage of skilled workers. This shortage is prompting reliance on immigrant workers, notably through the H-1B visa program. However, the program, intended for specialized foreign workers, faces an overwhelming demand.
Partner Sandra Sheridan Reguerin recently shared insights with Marketplace about these challenges and their impacts on the US semiconductor sector, highlighting the disconnect between the push for its growth and outdated immigration policies.
She highlights that, with less than 20% of H-1B visa applications approved for FY 2025, there is a pressing need for updated immigration policies to support the sector’s growth and innovation. The complexities of the current system are hindering companies’ ability to retain skilled foreign talent essential for advancing semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S.
