Apple ventures into AI chip development for data centers – Daily Jang
Apple has been working on its own chip designed to run artificial intelligence software in data centers.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the initiative, known as Project ACDC (Apple Chips in Data Center), seeks to utilize Apple’s chip design knowledge for enhancing its server infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the company has emerged as a major chip designer in recent years, thanks to the success of its semiconductors that are used in the iPhone, iPads and Mac laptops.
As per the WSJ report, Apple’s new server chip is expected to concentrate on executing AI models, rather than in training AI models, where Nvidia is dominant.
Moreover, facing mounting expectations amid a gradual rollout of AI services, CEO Tim Cook hinted last week at Apple’s plans to introduce numerous features driven by this technology in the coming months.
The report mentioned that Project ACDC has been in the works for several years , but it’s unclear when or if the new chip will be revealed.
It further emphasized that Apple has been working closely with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) to design and begin production of these chips.
However, it’s still uncertain whether they have completed a final product.
