New York woos Japan companies to join Micron in nascent chip hub – Nikkei Asia
State economic development chief offers suppliers tax breaks and cheap clean energy
TOKYO — The head of New York’s economic development agency is working to draw investment from Japanese chip industry suppliers as the state seeks to build a hub for the sector around Micron Technology’s planned fabrication facilities.
“Last year, we were able to attract Micron to central New York,” Hope Knight, president of Empire State Development (ESD), told Nikkei on Friday during a visit to Japan. “With that large investment that Micron is making — $100 billion — we know that we have to build out an ecosystem to support that activity. And so that’s why we’re here on this mission, to talk to Japanese firms, some of Micron’s suppliers, to come and locate to New York.”
