Governor Kathy Hochul announced Tuesday that the U.S. Department of Commerce has awarded $40 million to the New York Semiconductor Manufacturing and Research Technology Innovation Corridor (NY SMART-I Corridor) consortium.
The grant also rewards an additional $8 million in state funding through Empire State Development to put towards growing the industry. The state looks to assist the growth of their newest in-house industry over the next five years, with NY-SMART I being the focus. It was named one of only 31 Regional Technology and Innovation Hubs in the country.
“With this transformative federal grant, New York is taking another major leap toward building Chips Country in our state,” said Hochul.  “This award will help to bring the next generation of semiconductor research, manufacturing, and workforce training upstate and unlock even more funding – on top of our other state investments – to attract chipmaking businesses and jobs.”
NY SMART-I will serve to upscale semiconductor production in Upstate New York.
The consortium looks to, growing the corridor big enough to turn it into a globally competitive center of the industry, alongside the Governor’s Office of Semiconductor Expansion, Management, and Integration
