Vietnam determines to develop semiconductor industry
(MPI) – Vo Xuan Hoai, Vice Director of the Vietnam National Innovation Center (NIC), Ministry of Planning and Investment shared about the efforts and determination of the Government of Vietnam in developing the semiconductor industry, while attending the roundtable on discussing Southeast Asia collaboration of the “Market and Industry Trends Forum”, within the framework of SEMICON Southeast Asia 2024.

The SEMICON Southeast Asia 2024, an exposition for the electronics industry in the region, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from May 28-30. This is the largest event of the electronics manufacturing’s supply chains in the Southeast Asia, drawing the participation of international and regional leaders and experts in the semiconductor industry.
Themed “Boosting Agility and Resiliency of the Global Electronics Supply Chain”, the three-day event spotlighted critical areas driving the semiconductor industry, including sustainability, smart manufacturing, and workforce development.
Hoai said that ASEAN should collaborate to become a semiconductor “cluster”. ASEAN countries can take a unified approach such as jointly promoting ASEAN as a centre of innovation and semiconductors, cooperate on research and development (R&D) among institutions in the region, and establish a regional semiconductor council with representatives from each countries to coordinate, exchange experiences and set common goals. Thus, ASEAN will become an attractive and more competitive destination than the “old” semiconductor hubs in Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and China.
NIC vice director also shared about Vietnam’s plan to attract regional and global businesses in the semiconductor industry. A MPI-led scheme on workforce development for the semiconductor industry by 2030, with a vision to 2050 underscores efforts and determination of Vietnam in promoting the development of this potential field.
Vietnam has been investing significantly in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education to train workforce for the semiconductor industry. Many Vietnamese universities are actively expanding their academic offering for example Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Vietnam National University and Ho Chi Minh City National University are all establishing dedicated faculties or programmes on semiconductor technology. Many domestic universities have established partnership with the world’s leading chip manufacturers or leading universities in the US, South Korea, Europe and Japan to provide master’s and PhD programmes in this industry.
SEMICON Southeast Asia 2024 saw participation from over 500 companies and more than 1,000 booths, including those of the NIC and other Vietnamese businesses such as FPT Semiconductor, Becamex IDC, Sovico, Vietnam Cullinan Electric.
Amid rising geopolitical tensions, companies are restructuring their supply chains. Southeast Asia has emerged as an attractive destination for semiconductor companies. The SEMICON Southeast Asia 2024 connected policy makers, showcased advanced semiconductor products and bought the latest technology and market trends and solutions for dealing with current challenges./.
