21 Semiconductor Companies in India to Know – Built In

India’s semiconductor ecosystem could aid its ambitions for chip manufacturing.
India plays an integral role in designing the semiconductors needed for smartphones, artificial intelligence, automotive software and industrial applications. 
Most of the country’s semiconductor ecosystem is rooted in design, not fabrication. The Indian government wants to change that, though: In 2021, it unveiled its $10.2 billion India Semiconductor Mission, which aims to incentivize chip manufacturing in the country.
As demand for semiconductors heats up, India expects its semiconductor sector to be worth $64 billion by 2026. Below, we take a look at the companies that have established a solid foundation for India’s growing semiconductor sector.
 
Micron Technology manufactures computer memory and data storage solutions such as memory cards, solid state drives and advanced computing systems. The Idaho-based company employs more than 3,000 people at its delivery centers in Bangalore and Hyderabad. In 2023, it broke ground on the first phase of a $2.75 billion assembly and test manufacturing facility that is expected to create 5,000 new jobs in Gujarat. 
 
AMD is a large semiconductor company that develops internal processors, graphics cards and adaptive Systems on Chips (SoCs). The California-based company employs 6,500 employees across 10 Indian cities. In 2023, AMD announced it would open a 500,000-square-foot design center that will employ an estimated 3,000 engineers in Bangalore. The company expects to invest $400 million in research, development and engineering operations in India by 2028.
 
NXP designs and manufactures semiconductors for the automotive, mobile phone and industrial sectors. Headquartered in the Netherlands, it employs more than 2,500 Indian engineers across four offices in Noida, Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad. These employees work across a variety of NXP product lines, including edge processing, advanced analog, connectivity and security.
 
Samsung, one of the biggest semiconductor companies in the world, has a research and development office in Bangalore that designs processors, sensors, memory storage solutions and a spectrum of process technologies for performance computing, automotive and connectivity applications.
 
MosChip is a Hyderabad-based semiconductor design and verification company founded in 1999. The company has developed intellectual property for more than 30 semiconductor designs and more than 30 verification modules that can be leveraged along with third-party IP in its custom silicon solutions. It employs more than 1,300 engineers across its offices in Hyderabad, Bangalore and Silicon Valley.
 
Applied Materials, which specializes in materials engineering solutions for semiconductors, operates six India offices. In 2023, the company announced it would build a collaborative engineering center in Bangalore to develop and commercialize technologies needed for semiconductor manufacturing. The company expects to create 500 engineering jobs at the new engineering center.
 
Broadcom is a U.S. company with offices in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune. The company’s semiconductor products are used in a variety of telecommunications products, including data center switches and routers, embedded processors and wireless connectivity solutions. Broadcom Corporation was acquired by Avago for $37 billion in 2015. The combined companies were later renamed Broadcom Inc.
 
Microchip Technology designs embedded control solutions using microprocessors, microcontrollers, analog semiconductors and radiofrequency (RF) devices. The company, which employs more than 2,500 workers in India, announced in 2023 that it will invest $300 million in its facilities in Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad.
 
ASM Technologies is an engineering services firm that advises semiconductor equipment manufacturing companies on wafer metallization and packaging, among other manufacturing processes. The Bangalore-based company has development centers in Bangalore, Pune and Namakkal. It also operates manufacturing facilities in Chennai.
 
ChipLogic, which was founded in 2018, offers semiconductor IP blocks that can be used to design custom silicon solutions. The company has developed semiconductors that can be used for power management, memory storage, networking and image and video processing, among other applications. ChipLogic has offices in Bangalore and the U.K.
 
Sankalp Semiconductors has designed semiconductors for a wide range of industries, including automotive, Internet of Things (IoT), medical electronics, networking and wireless technologies. The company has offices in Bangalore, Kolkata and Hubli. It was acquired in 2019, becoming a division of HCL Technologies. HCL Technologies also provides engineering services to semiconductor equipment companies.  
 
Continental Device India Pvt. Ltd. (CDIL) says it was the first company to introduce silicon semiconductor technology when it was founded in 1964. The New Delhi-based company tests and packages transistors, diodes, rectifiers and other semiconductor technologies. Its test and packaging plant in Mohali, Punjab has the capacity to produce 600 million units per year. 
 
Wipro has more than 30 years of experience in the semiconductor design industry. The Bangalore-based company provides engineering solutions to eight of the top 10 semiconductor companies, including a longstanding partnership with Broadcom. With 35 patents to its name, Wipro has delivered more than 250 application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and SOCs.  
 
SPEL Semiconductor Limited says it is India’s first and only assembly and test facility for semiconductor integrated circuits (IC). The company provides package design, assembly and wafer sorting to integrated device manufacturers and fabless semiconductor companies. The company, which has offices in Chennai, was acquired in 2014 by Singapore-based semiconductor packaging and design company Natronix. 
 
Nvidia, one of the world’s leading semiconductor companies, is developing graphic processing units (GPUs), processors and AI supercomputers that could transform data center architecture and accelerate AI innovation in the manufacturing, automotive and healthcare industries. Nvidia has more than 3,800 employees in India, and it has engineering development centers in Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Pune and Bangalore.
 
Intel, one of the world’s top chip manufacturers since 1968, develops processors that can power AI solutions, data centers and other high-performance computing needs. The U.S. company employs 14,000 workers in India, and it operates semiconductor design facilities in Hyderabad and Bangalore.
 
Qualcomm develops processors used in 5G, smartphones, Bluetooth and other telecommunications technology. The company employs around 16,000 people across its 14 offices in India. The company said in 2023 that it would partner with Tata Group to package chips in India.
 
Marvell Technology designs and manufactures semiconductors for data infrastructure ranging from AI cloud data centers to 5G wireless infrastructure. It also develops networking, storage and industry-specific solutions. Marvell has offices in Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai. Its Bangalore office is the largest, with more than 1,000 employees.
 
Tata Group, a Mumbai-based conglomerate, announced in 2024 that it will open a semiconductor fabrication plant in Gujarat. Tata Elxsi, the company’s technology and design arm, also advises on semiconductor topics, like embedded system engineering and field-programmable gate array solutions.
 
Founded in 2006, Saankhya Labs says it is India’s first fabless semiconductor company. The company also developed the world’s first software-defined radios (SDR) chipsets, according to its website. Saankhya Labs is headquartered in Bangalore and employs more than 200 people.
 
Arm has played an influential role in developing GPU, CPU and NPU designs that continue to be licensed by leading technology companies. The company’s technology has been used in more than 270 billion chips used in smartphones, cloud computing, AI and automotive software. Arm employs between 800 and 1,000 employees in its Bangalore office and another 100 people in its Noida office.
